Sumi-e / Japanese ink painting on rice paper PAY PER CLASS Kensington
Introduction to Sumi-e (Japanese ink) painting. The Japanese term “sumi” means “black ink”, “e” means “painting” This way of painting was introduced into Japan by Zen monks , where reality is expressed by reducing it to its pure, bare form. Painting the essence. Touch-ups, additions and decorations do not enhance a work, but rather hide its true nature. Few marks of black ink painted with a brush on a simple sheet of white paper, can represent the most complex model. One must learn to capture the essence in order to get to the heart of reality as it is.
In these beginner's workshops you will learn the history, 4 treasures, also “4 gentlemen” of Sumi-e, how to prepare ink, how to hold the brush, and foundational brush strokes. At the end of the workshop you will paint either bamboo, orchid, chrysanthemum, plum tree, or an object of your choice.
Please email jurga@amehome.co.uk if you would like to book a class of minimum 4 people, to arrange timings.
